The flute decides everything else.

The wave glued between the liners is what makes corrugated board work. It sets how the pack cushions, how high it stacks, and how well it prints. Choose it first and the rest of the specification follows.

Why the profile matters more than the thickness.

A tall flute traps more air, so it absorbs impact and resists stacking load. A short flute puts more glue lines under the same area of liner, which makes a flatter, denser surface that prints cleanly and folds crisply. You are almost always trading one against the other, and the right answer depends on whether the box has to survive a pallet or look good on a doorstep.

Single wall profiles

One fluted layer between two liners. Heights are nominal and vary between mills.

A≈ 4.8 mm

Coarse flute

The tallest common profile. Best cushioning and stacking strength of the single walls, at the cost of bulk and a poor print surface.

Medium flute

The general shipping standard across Europe. Sits between A and B on every axis, which is exactly why it is the default when nothing pushes the specification either way.

Fine flute

Good crush resistance and a noticeably better print surface than C. The workhorse for ecommerce cartons, takeaway and anything die-cut.

Micro flute

Thin enough to behave like a folding carton while keeping corrugated rigidity. The usual choice where the box is part of the product experience.

Double wall combinations

Two fluted layers and three liners. Named by the profiles used, coarser first.

BC≈ 7.0 mm

Heavy duty double wall

The standard export and heavy-goods board. Stacks high and takes rough handling; too thick for fine print or tight die-cut detail.

Print-and-strength double wall

An E outer for the print surface over a B inner for strength. Specified where the pack has to survive transit and still present well when it arrives.

Wall constructions

Single face

One liner and one flute, unlined on the other side. Flexible, sold in rolls, used for wrapping and protection rather than boxes.

Single wall

Liner, flute, liner. The construction behind the great majority of boxes in circulation.

Double wall

Two flutes and three liners. Where single wall runs out of stacking strength.

Triple wall

Three flutes and four liners. Industrial loads and formats that would otherwise need a crate.

Profile letters and wall constructions follow standard European corrugated practice. Exact heights are specified per order.

How strength is actually measured

  • ECT (Edge Crush Test) measures how much force the board takes on its edge before it collapses. It predicts stacking strength, which is what matters on a pallet.
  • Burst strength, often called the Mullen test, measures resistance to a puncture through the face. It predicts rough handling rather than stacking.
  • Kraftliner is made from primarily virgin fibre and is stronger; testliner is primarily recycled. Most European board mixes both across the liners.
  • Flute heights on this page are nominal. Real board varies with the mill, the liners and the specification, so treat these as orientation and confirm the figure on the quote.
